Family photo season has a way of sneaking up on you.
One minute you're thinking oh, we have plenty of time to figure out outfits, and the next minute the session in Waynesville, NC is three days away and you're staring into your closet wondering if anyone even owns clothes that match. I've seen it happen more times than I can count - the last-minute scramble, the Amazon order that arrives looking nothing like the listing photo, the shoes that got completely forgotten until five minutes before we start shooting.
Outfit planning for family photos doesn't have to be stressful, and it genuinely doesn't have to be complicated. But it does help to have a starting point and someone in your corner who knows what actually works when you're standing on a mountain trail in the golden hour light.
The Lesson I Learned Early (And Never Forgot)
At one of the first sessions I ever did, I had a family session where everything was coming together - the location was beautiful, the light was cooperating, the energy was good. And then mom and I noticed the little girl's shoes. End-of-summer Crocs. Well worn, bright, unmistakable, very-much-present Crocs.
Her mom did NOT want them in the photos, so she had her daughter go barefoot.
.....We were on a gravel road.....
That little girl was in a mood that could not be turned around. And the photos reflected every bit of it.
It wasn't anybody's fault - nobody thinks about shoes until they're standing there. But that session taught me something I've carried ever since: the details you overlook in the planning stage show up front and center in the final images. And it's so much easier to think through the full picture ahead of time than to problem-solve on location with a grumpy nine-year-old and a gravel road.
My Actual Take on the "Rules" Everyone Pushes
You've probably read the same outfit guides I've seen floating around. Coordinate but don't match. Avoid logos. Stick to neutrals. Tan pants. Cream tops. And honestly? Some of that advice is fine. I'm not against a good neutral palette or a pair of tan pants.
But here's where I land after doing this long enough: these are YOUR family photos, and they should reflect YOUR family's personality.
Some families are a beiges-and-creams-with-light-blue kind of family. Some families are pinks and oranges like a sunset. Some are beautiful earth tones - greens, browns, mustard yellows. There isn't a wrong approach to this, as long as the colors work together and feel true to who you actually are.
The one thing I do agree with is no logos. Logos pull the eye away from the people in the frame, and your family should be the focus - not the brand on someone's chest.
Beyond that, I want you to think about it differently than most guides suggest.
Think About Your Walls, Not Just the Photos
Here's the question I actually want you to sit with: How is this going to look hanging in your home?
Because let's be honest - you're not going through all of this so the photos can live on a Facebook post and in your camera roll. You want to print these. You want them on your wall, in frames, in your living room where you see them every single day.
If your home is light and airy, a softer, more cohesive palette might feel right at home on your gallery wall.
If your space needs some life and color, a more vibrant palette might be exactly what makes those prints feel at home.

The Things I Wish Every Family Knew Before Their Session
Start with Mom - Seriously
As moms, we are wired to put everyone else first. We make sure the kids have the cutest outfits, we coordinate dad's shirt with the baby's bow, and then we grab whatever's left in our closet that sort of goes.
This is not the time to do that.
Start with something that makes you feel good. Pick a color you love, a silhouette that feels like you, something you'd genuinely be excited to put on. Then we build everyone else around that. When you feel good in what you're wearing, it shows - and it changes the whole energy of the session.
Don't Wait Until the Last Minute
Your session date will come up faster than you think. And while Amazon Prime feels like magic, it is not actually magic. Deliveries run late. Colors look different in person. Sizing is unpredictable.
Give yourself enough runway to:
- Order what you need with time to spare
- Try everything on (including shoes - all the shoes) before the day of
- Make a swap if something doesn't work the way you hoped
- Not be stressed out when you show up, because stressed doesn't photograph beautifully and calm does
Think Head to Toe
Shoes matter. Accessories matter. If your daughter is going to be in ballet flats, make sure those are part of the plan before you're standing on a gravel road in the Great Smoky Mountains wondering what to do. If you want a mountain view and it's a bit of a hike, shoes with heels are not your friend. Run through the full outfit - top to bottom - for every single family member before session day.
Why This Actually Matters
I know outfit planning can feel like just one more thing on an already long to-do list. But here's why I bring it up every time: the photos you're about to take are the ones you'll be looking at for the next twenty years.
The way your family looks and feels on that day is part of the story. The colors, the textures, the little details - they become part of the memory. And when you put the time and thought into the details ahead of time, you give yourself the best shot at images that feel like you - ones that look exactly right hanging in your home, exactly right on the Holiday card, exactly right when your kids look back at them someday and say, that's us.
